Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to increase productivity, create new industries and provide more inclusive services. For Australia to realise these benefits however, it will be important for citizens to have trust in the AI applications developed by businesses, governments and academia. One way to achieve this is to align the design and application of AI with ethical and inclusive values.

Artificial Intelligence: Australia’s Ethics Framework

Artificial Intelligence: Australia’s Ethics Framework

The Ethics Framework research was funded by the Australian Government in the 2018 May Budget and completed by CSIRO’s Data61. The work was guided by a steering committee of experts from industry, government and community organisations as well as many researchers within CSIRO/Data61. There were also consultative workshops in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth during 2018.

Public consultation

The discussion paper and details on how to provide feedback are available at: Consultation Hub

Feedback received during the consultation period will inform the Government’s approach to AI ethics in Australia.

Acknowledgements

The development of the draft Ethics Framework was led by CSIRO Data61’s Insight team. Authors of the paper include Dawson D and Schleiger E, Horton J, McLaughlin J, Robinson C, Quezada G, Scowcroft J, and Hajkowicz S.
