Recent months saw substantial impact for Data61:

  • Hovermap completes the world's first autonomous underground drone flight (covered in the Wall Street Journal ).
  • Data61 researchers collaborate with DST Group to develop the Cross Domain Desktop Compositor (CDDC); integrating several networks at differing security levels.
  • PaidRight , developed by Data61 in collaboration with PriceWaterhouse Coopers (PwC) uses analytics and digital legislation to ensure workers are paid fairly, launched in Sydney.
  • Our Women in Tech event, hosted at our ATP office in Eveleigh, drew a huge crowd and live-stream audience, along with discussion online.
  • We hosted the UN International Atomic Energy Agency International Robotics Challenge at our QCAT Pullenvale site; featuring 12 teams from 9 countries.
  • Data61 is contributing to two Smart Cities initiatives in Newcastle and Launceston. As an official research partner of Smart Move Newcastle , Raja Jurdak’s Distributed Sensing Team has contributed to the roll out of autonomous buses which will be trialled at the University of Newcastle. Other plans for Smart Move Newcastle include an electric bike share network powered by renewables, on-demand buses, apps and data dashboards with the vision of making travel and life in the city easier.
  • Launceston in Tasmania will be the first city in Australia to be covered by an Internet of Things (IoT) network. The project is a collaboration between Data61 and the University of Tasmania's Sense-T, Definium Technologies. The LORA network is a long range, low power network, similar to Wi-Fi which enables computer sensors embedded in everyday objects, to interact with each other via the internet so they can work together to improve how systems work such as road or train networks, medical devices, machine control and environmental monitoring.

In the news, we were featured for:

  • The launch of our Cyber for Directors course , in partnership with the AICD.
  • Our partnership with GE , using machine learning to improve pre-emptive maintenance on ship engines.
